It all started with a horse camp….

In 2013, we thought it would be great for our daughter to attend a week-long horse camp. It’s only a week, right?

After horse camp came weekly horse lessons, then bi-weekly lessons, then a partial horse lease, then a full lease, then owning one horse, then owning two horses…. You see where this is going! Along the way, we realized it's pretty rare for horses to have the same owners throughout their lives, and they don’t always end up with a safe place to live out their days.

This is what got our minds churning - if we bought a farm with a lot of land, we could provide that safe space to horses to relax and thrive, without any expectations as for what they could do for us. We firmly believe that horses deserve to be treated with dignity and respect for their entire lives, not just when they are useful to their owners.

This belief has extended to all of our animals. We have five horses and two donkeys who will live out the rest of their lives in our pastures. We will not get rid of our chickens or ducks when they no longer lay eggs. We love having goat wethers even though their primary purpose is to make us smile with their antics. Our resident steer is here because his owner could not bear to send him to freezer camp and needed to find him a forever home.

We have almost 45 acres with plenty of room for additional animals. But as you can imagine, the cost of veterinary care, hay, grain, bedding, and miscellaneous items is rising. We have formed this 501(c)3 to be able to give care and security to additional animals who are in need.

In addition, we would like to offer a safe space for humans to meet and interact with our animals. This is a “jerk free” zone. And we mean it.

some of What We’ve Achieved Since April 2021

  • Research, research, research! We have read more books and articles than we can count, and asked for lots of advice!

  • Replaced old, decrepit wooden fencing with sturdy posts and Hotwire to ensure the horses and donkeys are safe and cannot escape.

  • Planted over 700 Christmas trees that will eventually be harvested to support RBF residents.

  • Built a two-story chicken coop for the hens. Our free-range chicken and duck eggs will be sold to support RBF residents.

  • Given dozens of tours to facilitate relationships between the public and our residents and answered as many questions as we could!

  • Added a run-in so the donkeys could live out 24/7 like the horses and not be confined to a stall.

  • Replaced all of the skylight panels on the roof of the indoor arena to protect the hay storage and give the horses all-weather access to soft ground for exercise and rolling in the dirt.

  • Continue to offer enrichment to all of the animals in the form of trail rides/hand walks to the horses, treat balls for the donkeys, obstacle courses for the goats and steer, seed squares for the chickens, and a pool for the ducks.
